The Treasures Youā€™ll Find in a Teacup
May 17, 2022The “Easter Eggs” You’ll Find in a Teacup Tiny Cottage
Happy Easter!!
OK, we know it's not until this coming weekend, but the festivities have already started here at Teacup. And while we dig into our chocolate, we thought we'd take this opportunity to talk about our favorite subject- tiny cottages, cabins and houses!
We pride ourselves on being small space experts here at Teacup, but what does that mean, exactly? Well, it means that we have poured over hundreds of micro-decisions to make sure that you have a seamless experience of tiny living. This effort surprises some people! We often hear that because tiny houses are smaller, they must be easier to build, but actually, the opposite is true! You see, when you think in terms of square inches rather than square feet, every decision becomes more potent.
Long story short: we've worked really hard to make sure that every inch of your Teacup is serving you, and today, we'd like to tell you about a few of the "Easter egg" features in our builds that we're most proud of. (Easter egg- see what we did there?)
So without further ado, here are some things to look for!
-
Places to Set the Small Stuff.
People tend to get hung up on the big stuff when it comes to storage. Customers want to know where they will store their sporting equipment, dog kennel, and beloved air fryer. And while we have plenty of space for those things, here at Teacup, we want you to know that we've taken it upon ourselves to think through the little things too.
We know that having dedicated, easy-to-access spaces for things like coats, keys, purses, dog leashes, and shoes will make or break your experience of small-space living. So why is this the case? Well, let us introduce you to the concept of "Rubix cubing."
The last thing you want to be doing in a tiny is Rubix cubing. Rubix-cubing is when you have to take your space apart every time you want to access something. It's to be avoided at all costs- especially for the items you'll want to access regularly! So here are some ways we keep things simple.
You'll notice that in our storage stair option, we have purposely built in little cubbies. This makes it a super easy place to store anything you might want to grab on your way out the door. Don't want to see what's there? Slide-out baskets solve that problem instantly! Check this out in our Margo plan, where we added the stairs to the main loft.
We think the stairs are pretty cool, but The Margo's small-item storage doesn't end there! The added mantle beam above the fireplace in our client's model is an excellent place to store what we like to call 'functional art.' It's the perfect place for things like a bottle of champagne, a candle, or an antique clock. Anything that looks good and you'll want to use regularly!
We have to move on, but here are just a few rapid-fire examples of other small space storage you'll find in The Margo:
-The toe-kick cabinet leading into the bedroom
-The space above the refrigerator
-The built-in wall shelf next to the toilet
-And the full 4" edge all the way around the bathtub

Light & Lightness.
You'll notice some high windows in our Ruby Model- ones you probably won't ever see out of. So why did we include them? Simple. They provide insane light.
Light is everything in a tiny cottage. Need more proof? Just check out The Tagish. Customers frequently choose the skylight upgrade option in this model to make that living room truly pop.
Need even more proof that natural lighting is everything? The rake windows in The UMI make a loft glow like nobody's business. Oh, and if you really want to take things to the next level, let's put a glass front door in your Teacup. You won't regret that one.
Yup! Natural lighting really is that important, but windows and doors aren't the only way we create a sense of lightness in a tiny cottage. We also have a kitchen trick!
Of course, you will get to pick the color of your cabinets. But, if you study the models in our products gallery, you'll notice that we like to make our lower cabinets darker and use more light-colored open-shelving up top.
This setup does a couple of things. First of all, it hides what you want to hide while displaying what you want to display. Secondly, it creates a gradient: darker and more covered, to lighter and more open. This gives you the sense of being welcomed into a bigger space as your eyes travel. It's one of those Easter eggs you may not consciously notice, but your subconscious brain will love!

Dedicated Eating Spaces.
We can't tell you how many tiny builds we see that don't include a place to eat a proper meal! Have you ever tried to eat steak on a couch?! It's rough. Food is a life force, and eating together is such a primordial way of bonding. Our team at Teacup values mealtimes deeply, and that's why we've worked hard to create functional spaces that allow you to come together over food.
Our dining space options play out differently in each of our models. For instance, in one Custom Ruby, you will find an actual, full dining table. If your style is a little more casual, however, the breakfast bar in The Margo could be just the ticket.
Looking to split the difference? We've got that covered too! The Tagish, The UMI, and The Safe Haven all have L-shaped kitchen counters that pull double duty as workspaces and family dinner tables. Bon appétit!
~
We hope you have enjoyed discovering these Teacup Easter eggs as much as we enjoyed tucking them into our builds! Easter is about more than eggs and chocolate, though, it's truly a season of rebirth, and at the end of the day, that's what we aspire to give when we turn over the keys to a new tiny house owner.
Most people who bring a tiny cottage, cabin or house into their lives will tell you that doing so marked a turning point. This is because a tiny will bring you closer to what you value faster than just about anything on Earth. And if you don't believe us, we encourage you to hear what other Teacup owners are saying.
So, if you feel ready for a season of rebirth in your life, we have just the thing. Will you go for The UMI? The Tagish? Or maybe you just need to look at everything one more time. Whichever model you choose, rest assured, there will be plenty of Easter eggs!
Until next time,
-Jen
